Lagoon hotel going from rumor to reality

Rumors of a hotel at Lagoon have surfaced from time to time during recent years and its been said that the park has considered the possibility to some extent. Now a Phoenix-based hospitality firm plans to build the first Farmington hotel in decades less than a mile from the park's entrance.

Dharmesh Ahir, Chief Operating Officer of Five Star Management & Development, is planning an 84-room Hampton Inn on the corner of Park Lane and Lagoon Drive (most likely the northeast corner). According to the Davis County Clipper's article last Thursday, the plans have already been reviewed and approved by the Farmington City Council. The council has also allowed Ahir to pay the required impact fees of $200,000 in three installments before it opens, when it opens and after a year of operation. Few were reluctant in this kind of payment plan, reasoning that the boost in economic development was more important.

Five Star Management & Development currently operates nine hotels from different franchises with three other sites waiting to be developed - all in Arizona. The company's website mentions nothing about a hotel in Farmington, so its unclear as to whether or not this will be operated by the company or Ahir himself. If run by Five Star it will be their first in Utah and their first Hampton Inn franchise.

It's unknown how long it will be until construction begins, but it appears that Ahir is still waiting for a business license.

Currently, the nearest hotels to the Lagoon property have been Bountiful to the south and Layton to the north. This may help the already growing number of out-of-state visitors to Lagoon which recently jumped by 17%.

What's With The Webcam?

For those who keep an eye on Lagoon's webcam, you may have noticed that the image hasn't been updated since March 5th. Since it has always made a nice addition to the sidebar of this blog, I sent a quick email to WeatherBug who sent me this response:

Dear Valued WeatherBug Customer,

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Status
of this WeatherBug Camera. We spoke with the location and the site stated that
they have moved the camera to a new location, but have not yet fully installed
the system. We will be notified as soon as it is operational and place it back in
our system. Thank you for supporting WeatherBug.

Sincerely,

WeatherBug Customer Support

So it appears that we may be getting a different view of the park as soon as it is up and running again. Does anybody else remember when it was on the South Midway with a view of Wild Mouse?
P.S. As for the weather information on the sidebar, it seems the feed the widget uses has a lot of zip codes mixed up or something. If it's not fixed by the time the park opens, I'll be looking for a different widget.

NEWS: Lagoon opening sans 'Wicked'

Park's newest roller coaster should be ready to roll in June

By
Lynn Arave
Deseret Morning News

FARMINGTON — When Lagoon opens Saturday for its 121st season, it won't be "wicked." But, as with most preseasons at Lagoon, the park will likely have short lines for all the rides that are open that day.

Lagoon employee Dillon Linck works on the children's Red Baron ride in Farmington. The amusement park will open on Saturday.

Wicked is the park's new $10 million roller coaster, which won't be ready for opening day. "We ran into some manufacturing problems that we had to correct," said Lagoon spokesman Dick Andrew.

The roller coaster will be ready in June; however, he said, "We haven't set a specific date."

This new "launch tower" roller coaster is being built just west of the Fire Dragon, and it will be Lagoon's tallest at 110 feet and its fastest at 55 mph. (Riding the Fire Dragon or the Spider will afford fans a nice view of the new coaster under construction.)

Despite the absence of Lagoon's new premier ride during the preseason, the park should have all of its usual rides operating (except Lagoon-A-Beach), and three of the old rides have been extensively refurbished for the 2007 season.

Lagoon has also refurbished its two "scary" rides — the Terroride and Dracula's Castle. "We've refurbished the interiors," Andrew said. "They'll be a lot more fun."

Another key change this year is the Tidal Wave — a favorite stomach-tickler — which has also been refurbished. Lagoon's staff repainted and rebuilt the ride from the ground up. "It will look like a new ride," Andrew said.

Lagoon also plans to use its overflow parking area north of the park — if needed — because of the addition of Wicked in what was once a parking area.

The park will also continue its picnic policy of allowing outside food in, to be eaten at one of its numerous shady picnic areas. And there are the usual options of purchasing edibles at Lagoon's many food outlets.

NEWS: Something 'Wicked' this way comes, eventually

The Associated Press
Salt Lake Tribune

FARMINGTON - "Wicked," a new $10 million rollercoaster, won't be ready when a popular northern Utah amusement park opens Saturday.

The German-made rollercoaster will be Lagoon's fastest ride, but some parts need to be retooled.

"We ran into some manufacturing problems," said Dick Andrew, the park's vice president of marketing.

The rollercoaster will have a dark tunnel filled with mist, a 110-foot tower and a maximum speed of 55 mph. It could open in June, Andrew said.

NEWS: Lagoon opening soon for 2007 season

DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER
Doug Radunich

FARMINGTON — Beginning in just four days, Lagoon will open its gates for the start of its upcoming spring season.

The park will open Saturday, April 7, for just weekends until the summer season begins June 1. Spring season hours will be 10 a.m-7 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. on Sundays.

The “Terroride” and “Dracula's Castle” will both be refashioned for the 2007 season. As the only dark rides at Lagoon, they will now offer new frights, spooks and other worldly creatures to send chills down your spine.

The “Tidal Wave,” which was disassembled in the winter of 2006, will be refurbished and have a brand new paint job. Rebuilding the ride from the ground up, Lagoon’s Maintenance staff is working to have the renovated Tidal Wave ready for opening day.

Attendants will be informed of which rides are either open or closed at the front entrance to the park. However, Lagoon’s brand new futuristic rollercoaster “Wicked” will reportedly not be open to the public until June or July.

The park will be accessible to the entire public upon its opening April 7, and customers can bring in a can of Coke and get $5 off on tickets to enter the park or for the “Skycoaster.” Lagoon’s “Bounce-back” day will also be announced soon.

Lagoon also offers a series of group ticketing plans for the season. These plans include the Group Deal, which saves $6.45 on regular ride passports, the Great Group Deal, which saves $8.95 on regular ride passports and the Great Meal Deal, which saves $12 on regular ride passports. Special season passports will also be made available.

For further information including summer season hours, call Lagoon at 451-8000 or visit www.lagoonpark.com. Lagoon is located at 375 N. Lagoon Dr. in Farmington.

News: More Than Wicked

As if a brand new $10 million coaster wasn't enough, Lagoon is also making extensive improvements to the park's darker side this year.

The park announced through its website that Dracula's Castle and Terroride are both undergoing changes. From the photos posted on the official site, the work being done seems very promising. It is unknown at this point what features of the dark rides are being replaced or repaired.

The pirates and wenches over at Tidal Wave aren't being left in the dust either. The entire ride is said to have been completely dismantled and is being thoroughly repainted as it is rebuilt. The changes are planned to be ready for opening day on April 7th.

Many park visitors will be glad to see Lagoon is giving these rides the attention they deserve. Good dark rides are very hard to come by these days as more and more disappear because of poor maintenance. Terroride will be forty years old this season. Dracula's Castle was added in 1974 and Tidal Wave arrived in 1980.
